No matter how well you eat or how frequently you exercise, unwanted areas of fatty tissue can still appear. Unfortunately, these fat deposits may prove difficult to improve with even the most ardent lifestyle changes. Luckily, innovative liposuction techniques are now available with Dr. Leonard Miller and Dr. Sean Doherty at the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation.
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed today, and for good reason. The semi-invasive technique can be useful to sculpt almost any area of the body, restoring a youthful contour and shape. At the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation, each custom-tailored liposuction treatment plan will provide unmatched slenderizing benefits that will last for years to come.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction, sometimes referred to as lipo-sculpture, is a semi-invasive technique created to eliminate unwanted fatty tissue and sculpt the target area. At the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation, each liposuction procedure is custom designed to meet every individual patient’s one-of-a-kind needs. During the outpatient procedure, Dr. Miller and Dr. Doherty will meticulously vacuum away the unappealing fat cells, restoring body contours and a youthful silhouette. Extremely safe when performed by an experienced, board-certified physician, liposuction can dramatically improve the appearance. Best of all, as the fat cells will not return, the benefits from liposuction can last for years to come.
Liposuction has the ability to provide excellent body sculpting results on its own. However, the technique can also be paired with additional procedures, such as a Tummy Tuck or Neck Lift, to provide the ideal benefits. During the consultation appointment, Dr. Miller and Dr. Doherty will go over the technique(s) necessary for successfully achieving the desired results.
Liposuction is Commonly Used to Treat:
- Abdomen
- Flanks
- Buttocks
- Thighs
- Lower Back
- Upper Arms
- Breast Tissue
- Neck/Chin/Jowls
The Ideal Candidate For Liposuction
Liposuction can be beneficial for almost anyone in overall good health, yet unhappy with isolated areas of fat that prove to be unresponsive to diet or exercise. It is important that potential patients understand the liposuction technique, recovery requirements, and hold realistic expectations for their results. An ideal candidate will be a nonsmoker, as nicotine can cause delayed healing and serious complications.
The Liposuction Procedure
Dr. Miller and Dr. Doherty’s liposuction procedures are performed at an accredited, area surgical center. General anesthesia is normally used during the procedure, administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Each liposuction procedure will vary in length according to the patient, the treatment area, and the extent of correction; generally taking from one to three hours. Patients are back at home resting the same evening.
The liposuction procedure will start with Dr. Miller or Dr. Doherty making several small incisions along the treatment area. Through these incisions, a small cannula or tube will be inserted. A solution containing saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine is injected into the treatment area, hydrating and further numbing the tissue. The medicated fluid will cause the fatty tissue to swell and become firm. The fat cells are then broken up before being vacuumed through the cannula, using a specially designed suction pump. Dr. Miller and Dr. Doherty will continue this process until the desired results have been achieved.
There are several different liposuction techniques that can be utilized, depending on the needs of each patient. The best method will depend on a variety of factors and will be discussed in detail during the consultation appointment.
- Tumescent Liposuction: Tumescent liposuction begins with a large volume of medicated fluid, which stiffens the fatty tissue for successful removal. This medication mix also reduces bleeding and post-op bruising. Tumescent liposuction is the first choice for Dr. Miller and Dr. Doherty, especially when treating a large area.
- Laser Liposuction: Laser liposuction, or Lipolysis by SlimLipo™ and Smart Lipo™, use laser light to melt away large areas of fat. The procedure is easier on tissues than traditional liposuction, offering excellent results with shorter downtime and less bruising. Additionally, the gentle heating of tissues will encourage skin tightening.
- Syringe Suction: Designed for the most delicate of areas, like the face and neck, syringe liposuction does not involve a suction pump. The syringe is able to gently, and accurately, achieve a meticulous contour and detailed results. Syringe suction is best for those patients looking to eliminate a small amount of unwanted fat along the neck and chin.
Recovery And Results From Liposuction
The modern liposuction techniques used by Dr. Miller and Dr. Doherty mean shorter downtime and post-operative discomfort. Depending on the extent of correction, the expected recovery time from liposuction is one to two weeks. Many people are back at work in less than a week. Exercise, heavy lifting, and strenuous movements will need to be postponed for three to six weeks.
Had some stubborn fat underneath and around my chin and was looking for a more defined chin and jawline. I had neck liposuction with thermi tightening and I’m ecstatic with my results. The procedure itself was quick and painless, Dr. Miller clearly knows what he is doing (in fact, he developed the technology and the technique used to conduct the thermitight procedure). Highly recommend to anyone looking for a great improvement with minimally invasive surgery and almost no down time.
Initially, patients should expect some swelling, bruising, tenderness, and mild discomfort. Temporary numbness or burning sensations are not uncommon but will quickly improve. A compression garment will need to be worn for two to three weeks, keeping swelling to a minimum and encouraging healing.
While some results from liposuction may be noticeable right away, the full results will take several weeks to be seen, as the swelling continues to go down and tissues heal. The benefits of liposuction can continue to improve for six months or more. While the excised fat cells will not reappear, surrounding tissues can still change with weight fluctuations, so it is important to commit to a healthy diet and consistent exercise routine To help maintain the results from liposuction, the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation can suggest additional treatments, such as Botox®, medical facials, and CoolSculpting.

Almost anyone in good health, wanting to eliminate isolated, stubborn fatty tissue, may make a good candidate for liposuction. Potential patients should understand the intended liposuction procedure, the recovery requirements, and hold realistic expectations for their results.
Dr. Miller and Dr. Doherty will place several small incisions along the treatment area for cannula placement. While these incisions do leave small scars, they are well-concealed within the natural creases of the skin. Over time, the scarring can also be expected to fade.
Depending on the individual patient and the extent of correction, the recovery from liposuction will take one to two weeks. Tenderness, bruising, and swelling can initially be expected. Most patients are feeling good enough to return to work in a week or less.
When performed by a board-certified, experienced physician, such as Dr. Miller or Dr. Doherty, liposuction is an extremely safe procedure. However, there is always a small chance for complications to occur. Although rare, these may include unexpected scarring, bleeding, infection, nerve damage, and fat embolism.
