Botox Cosmetic is one of the most popular aesthetic procedures in Boston for a reason: it works. Botox face injections reduce the contractions of the muscles that cause persistent lines and creases that develop over time in a number of areas on the face. Botox can treat mild to severe frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet lines, drooping corners of the mouth, lip lines and neck folds. Our patients also find Botox very useful in alleviating sweating under their arms and in their hands.
When Botox face injections are used in conjunction with Juvederm or other Dermal Fillers, the effect is a non-surgical facelift, or “Liquid Facelift.” World-renowned Boston Plastic Surgeon Dr. Leonard Miller, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Sean Doherty, and board-certified dermatologists Dr. Farah Moustafa and Dr. Melissa Michelon have extensive experience and expertise in achieving beautiful, natural looking results by maintaining a less-is-more approach. Dr. Miller was recently named the Best of Boston for Botox Cosmetic by Boston Magazine.

How Botox Works
Long before permanent wrinkles, crow’s feet, and fine lines around the mouth form, facial expressions are brought about by voluntary motions. We consciously decide to smile, furrow our brows, and perform other motions, and nerves in the affected areas signal the brain of our intentions. In turn, the brain sends signals to other nerves telling the necessary muscles to carry out those movements.
Over time as the skin and muscles lose their elasticity those expressions become involuntary. They become frozen in place due to lack of muscle relaxation and reduced skin flexibility. Botox facial injections paralyze the muscles responsible for signs of aging by blocking nerve signals from the brain. After an injection muscles in the treated area relax and so do wrinkles on the surface.
The Botox Procedure
The administering of Botox injections in our practice is one simple, 10-minute treatment performed by Dr. Miller, Dr. Doherty, Dr. Moustafa or Dr. Michelon. Through tiny, carefully placed injections, he targets specific muscles in the treatment area for desired results. This causes a temporary relaxation of the muscles, leading to a reduction in the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines caused by muscle contraction. Over time, with continued treatment, the reappearance of these lines may also be reduced because of moderate weakening of muscles in the treated areas. Topical and/or injectable numbing options are available to patients upon request.
Botox For Overactive Sweat Glands (Hyperhidrosis)
Sweating is the body’s normal involuntary response to heat, physical exertion and stressful situations. When body heat rises due to either of these factors, nerves once again come into play. In conjunction with the brain, they trigger sweating as a way of regulating body temperature. In some cases, sweat glands in the armpits and palms of the hands react a bit too enthusiastically, bringing about the need for medical intervention.
This condition, known as hyperhidrosis, could have a negative impact on those who suffer from it. Since it can’t be controlled by simply trying to remain cool, many find themselves avoiding social situations. Hyperhidrosis can actually lead to anxiety and alter people’s lifestyles.
Skin irritation is also a common result of excessive sweating. Aside from being uncomfortable, this is not particularly harmful on its own but it can lead to other problems. Any number of bacteria could work their way into the skin in the affected areas, paving the way for infections to take hold. When additional conditions like diabetes or immune system deficiencies are also present this could be a dangerous scenario.
Just as Botox skin injections block nerve signals to reduce wrinkles, they can prevent nerves from triggering the sweating response in the hands and armpits. This will not affect the body’s ability to regulate its internal temperature because other sweat glands located all over the body will continue to function normally. It will simply stop excessive sweating in the treated areas. The results are increased self-esteem and greater freedom to face the world with confidence.
After Your Botox Treatment
Once we’ve completed your Botox treatment, we’ll ask you to carry out certain facial movements to be sure the injections were successful. We recommend not lying down immediately after the procedure or rubbing your skin at the injection site. These are standard rules of thumb for every patient, and our specific after-care instructions for you will be determined at the time of the procedure. Following our instructions is crucial to achieving optimum results.
I have been seeing Dr. Miller since I was 25 for preventative botox (now 32). The most common question I am asked by friends is, “Do you look like the real housewives now?” The answer is, no. I look like myself, and If I didn’t share my beauty secrets, nobody would notice. I would trust Dr. Miller with any of his procedures. He’s reputable, approachable and as a bonus his staff is knowledgeable and warm.
Botox Recovery
There is no recovery time with Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin face injections. Many of our patients have the treatment performed during their lunch hour. As with any injection, after treatment you may experience some slight redness at the injection site.
Botox Results
The result of Botox injections can usually be seen within 3-7 days and can last for up to four months although individual results will vary. Many patients return to the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation for other services like Juvederm, advanced laser treatments, and medical facial treatments.
While the average length of time injections last is four months, your results may be a bit different. Some patients only need injections once or twice each year but, for others, results begin to fade after only a couple months. The depth of your wrinkles, the condition of your skin before the procedure, and other determining factors may play roles in how often you need Botox treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions About Botox In Boston
Botox is an injectable treatment, designed to temporarily ease wrinkles and fine lines. Made from botulinum toxin type A, Botox will relax targeted muscles, thus smoothing the associated facial creases.
As Botox Cosmetic works by releasing the muscles that cause fine lines, it is appropriate for dynamic wrinkles, or those associated with repetitive expressions. Botox can successfully treat forehead creases, Frown Lines (the 11’s between the eye brows), and Crow’s Feet. The injectable can also shape the lips and mouth, improve neck folds and even treat hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.
The ideal candidate for Botox Cosmetic injections will be in overall good health, understand the noninvasive treatment, and hold realistic expectations for the final results. However, those who have certain skin conditions or are pregnant/nursing may be asked to postpone treatment. During your consultation, Dr. Miller, Dr. Doherty, Dr. Moustafa or Dr. Michelon will determine if Botox Cosmetic is right for you.
The benefits of Botox are not seen right away. Over the following one to two weeks, as the Botox begins to relax the targeted muscles, the results will start to appear. The wrinkle-reducing effects of Botox will then last for three months, alter which time a repeat session can further extend the benefits.
Botox Cosmetic is considered a safe method for treating dynamic wrinkles. Side-effects are mild, including tenderness, pin-point bleeding, redness, and bruising. However, these will quickly resolve. More serious complications, such as an infection, asymmetry, or nerve damage are rare. For the safest and most satisfactory results, patients should only choose an experienced Botox Cosmetic provider, such as the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation’s Dr. Miller.
