Lasers are one of my areas of expertise. They are also one of my passions. I love their versatility and effectiveness. Depending on which laser or lasers that we choose for your anatomy, lifestyle and needs, I can address all of the skin tone issues that may be making you feel down. Furthermore, with my younger patients, I can use lasers as a form of pre-juvenation, and actually delay the early signs of skin aging. Great for both men and women, laser therapy can make you look and feel more vital, energetic, and confident. Winter is a great time for a laser treatment as I can’t perform the procedure if your skin is tan. Furthermore, you are definitely going to want to protect your new “baby”, post treatment skin from the sun. And a typical Boston winter makes this easy to do!
Ideal Candidate for Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is truly for everybody. Assuming that you are in good overall health, lasers can be an ideal procedure for any man or woman who is bothered by:
- Fine lines & wrinkles
- Broken blood vessels
- Sun spots
- Hyperpigmentation or melasma
- Uneven “crepey” skin texture
In general, my younger patients come to see me to keep their skin looking youthful, and prevent or delay aging issues in the skin. And my older patients come to me to improve a specific issue. While both men and women are bothered by fines lines and wrinkles, men are actually more concerned by redness and uneven pigment than many of my female patients. This is ironic given that treating lines without addressing the other texture issues is like wearing a shirt without pants — weirdly incomplete.
Choosing the Right Laser for You
If you are considering a laser procedure, it is really important to schedule an in-person consultation with a Board-Certified dermatologist such as myself or a Board-Certified plastic surgeon such as my colleagues here at Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation (BCFFR). The internet has made people more aware of the various laser procedures available today. However, no aesthetic procedure is one size fits all. In order to ensure a safe, excellent result, you need to choose the right laser for you.
During your consultation, I will listen to what bothers you about your skin. I will inquire into your medical history, family history and lifestyle choices such as:
- How much time do you spend in the sun?
- Are you a smoker?
- Do you live in or near a big city?
- What is your diet and exercise routine?
The three main factors that I consider when thinking about the right laser or lasers for you are:
- Skin concerns
Skin Concerns Drive Laser Choice
Your specific concern is the main driver when it comes to choosing the right laser. Although most patients have more than one thing going on with their skin, I always start by discussing what brought you into the office. For many, this is fine lines and wrinkles since they are one of the most obvious signs of facial aging. It’s important to understand, however, that skin texture issues such as redness and sun spots can be just as aging. It all has to do with perception. The human eye correlates smooth, plump skin with youthful looking skin. Furthermore, alleviating texture issues results in skin that glows. As we all know, glowing skin is healthy looking skin. Also, when our skin looks healthier, we feel better.
Cost of a Laser Procedure
The second factor that I always take into consideration when coming up with your treatment plan is cost. The expense of your laser procedure is going to depend on which laser or lasers we decide to use as well as the size of the treatment area. Some lasers require multiple treatments, spaced 3-4 weeks apart in order to deliver your final result. But they also tend to be the ones with less downtime. Other lasers may only require one treatment yet are a bigger investment in terms of recovery. The right recipe is going to require a balance between the cost of your laser treatment and your tolerance for downtime.
Downtime with Lasers Varies by Procedure
In general, I like to use the 1540nm laser for rejuvenation and pre-juvenation to address fine lines and wrinkles as well as overall texture. I typically recommend about 3 treatments a year. Clear + Brilliant is the laser equivalent of a facial. It is so gentle that you can get one monthly. The more you do, the better you look. But it’s not going to reverse more severe aging issues. For that, you may need an ablative laser such as CO2. However, it may require up to 2 weeks of downtime.
Excel V is my go-to for redness while the right laser for sun spots and hyperpigmentation is going to depend. Some patients come in with 3 large brown spots that drive them nuts while others want to restore the porcelain complexion of their youth. Depending on your budget and tolerance for recovery, I can tailor your laser procedure accordingly. At the end of the day, my goal is to find the right treatment plan to improve your skin that will best fit both your budget and your lifestyle.
