What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a professional exfoliation treatment that gently removes the upper layers of dead and damaged skin cells to improve the appearance of common skin-related issues. The procedure involves using a handheld device to carefully spray on exfoliating crystals to sand away the outermost layer of dead skin cells. Both the exfoliating crystals and any particles and debris that become dislodged from the skin are vacuumed and discarded during the procedure.
A safe and effective procedure for people of all skin types and colors, microdermabrasion can help with the following concerns:
- Sun damage and sun spots
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Age spots, brown spots, and hyperpigmentation
- Melasma
- Acne and minor acne scars
- Stretch marks
- Light facial scars
- Pockmarked skin
- Uneven skin pigmentation or texture
- Dull skin tone or dull complexion
- Enlarged pores and blackheads
Benefits of a Microdermabrasion Facial
Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure that can help reduce the appearance of skin concerns such as uneven skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and sunspots. This non-invasive procedure is suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin and helps to improve overall texture and tone. By gently removing the upper layer of dead and damaged cells on the surface of your skin, microdermabrasion reveals smoother, softer skin while stimulating collagen production in the deeper layers of your skin. Additionally, this treatment can help unclog pores and minimize their appearance while reducing any redness or discoloration due to sun damage. In short, microdermabrasion can be a great way to achieve smoother, younger-looking skin with minimal discomfort or downtime.
Am I a Candidate for Microdermabrasion?
You might be a good candidate for microdermabrasion if you are looking for a non-invasive, pain-free procedure that enhances your skin’s natural beauty while reducing common signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, or an overall dull facial skin appearance. Please let your aesthetician know if you’ve recently had a chemical peel, Botox, facial fillers, collagen injections, laser, or invasive skin treatment, as you may need to wait a week or two to allow your skin to fully heal before microdermabrasion.
You may not be a candidate for microdermabrasion at this time if you are:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have active cystic acne
- Have very dry skin
- Have an open rash or broken skin
- Prone to getting keloids

Preparing for Microdermabrasion
Although microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure, it is important to prepare to make sure you obtain the best results possible. In the days leading up to your microdermabrasion treatment:
- Avoid using Retin-A skincare products and discontinue mechanical exfoliation
- Refrain from tanning or using tanning creams/sprays
- Stay out of the sun and wear UV protection of 30 SPF or higher
- Wash your face with a lipid-free, non-soap-based cleanser
- Avoid waxing the treatment area
Microdermabrasion Procedure & Recovery
Microdermabrasion involves a controlled spray of fine, exfoliating crystals that will be guided over the surface of the skin. This gentle surge works to delicately remove the top layer of skin in a safe manner, typically leading to a fresher, healthier complexion. Due to the mild nature of this technique, a series of about six to eight 30-minute treatments performed over the course of several weeks is often necessary to achieve optimal results.
Following microdermabrasion, most patients are able to continue normal daily routines immediately. Some temporary redness may occur in the treatment areas, but this coloring should dissipate within about 24 hours. Additionally, it is important to keep the skin clean and well moisturized for several days after treatment in order to maintain results. Your aesthetician at the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation will recommend skin care products to keep your complexion healthy following your first treatment session.
Microdermabrasion Aftercare Instructions and Tips
Microdermabrasion is an increasingly popular and effective procedure for improving the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, and hands. The procedure uses tiny exfoliating crystals to gently remove the top layers of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and can help reduce wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, enlarged pores, and other imperfections. After having a microdermabrasion treatment, it is important to follow post-care instructions in order to maximize results while minimizing any risk of irritation or infection.
Immediately the Following Treatment
• Make sure to keep your skin protected from sun exposure by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher. Sun exposure will make any redness or swelling worse and can also reverse some of the effects of microdermabrasion. You should also avoid using any tanning beds for at least two weeks after treatment. Wearing a hat when outside is also recommended to further protect your skin from UV rays.
• Apply a gentle moisturizer several times per day after treatments in order to help with healing and reduce any discomfort that may occur due to dryness or irritation. It is important to avoid using any products that contain retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or salicylic acid for at least three days following treatment as these ingredients can be too harsh on freshly exfoliated skin.
• Avoid physical activity such as exercise or sports for at least 24 hours following treatment since this could cause excessive sweating which could lead to irritation or infection.
Long Term Care
• Maintain regular use of sunscreen even after you have completed all your treatments since this will help protect against damaging UV rays and keep your results looking their best over time.
• Continue good skin care habits such as cleansing twice daily with a gentle cleanser followed by moisturizing regularly in order to keep your skin hydrated and healthy looking between treatments. Avoiding using products with retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or salicylic acid for at least three days following each microdermabrasion session in order to prevent irritation but you can use them again once your skin has healed completely after each session if desired.
Microdermabrasion Cost
The cost for microdermabrasion treatments ranges from $100-$250 per session, depending on the size of the treatment area and the number of sessions required to achieve desired results. Most aesthetic practices offer package deals for multiple treatments which can help to reduce overall costs. Before starting microdermabrasion treatments, patients should consult with a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon or licensed aesthetician to determine an estimated cost as well as any possible discounts or promotions that may be available.
Microdermabrasion Results
Most people see improvements after their first microdermabrasion session, but it usually takes four to six treatments to see significant results. Boston patients who have had Microdermabrasion Facials performed by one of our aestheticians are very happy with the results, and many return to the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation for other services like Botox®, dermal fillers, and advanced laser treatments.

The longevity of your microdermabrasion results will depend on how well your skin heals after treatment. On average, the effects of the treatment typically last for one month or longer.
Yes! When performed by a licensed and experienced aesthetician, microdermabrasion is considered a safe procedure for most people.
The main difference between microdermabrasion and dermabrasion is the intensity of each treatment. Whereas microdermabrasion is a minimally-invasive procedure that removes the outer layer of skin cells, dermabrasion is a cosmetic surgery procedure where a dermatologist or plastic surgeon uses a specialized instrument to scrape the topmost layers of skin, not just dead cells. Both procedures result in healthier-looking skin and increased collagen growth.
