The hallmark of a young face is a natural V-Shape, slender and defined along the jawline. Over time, the skin’s elasticity diminishes, tissue sags, and jowls begin to appear, slowly inverting the V-Shape. PDO Threads provides safe and innovative option for patients looking to restore the face’s youthful shape by delicately lifting tissues and creating taut, smooth skin with minimal swelling or complications. By recreating facial contours, years are taken off the appearance.
Dr. Leonard Miller was one of the first doctors in the Boston area to offer noninvasive facial rejuvenation with PDO Threads . Using unique, absorbable threads, placed under the skin, Dr. Miller can create structure and lift for the tissues. Over time, the body’s natural healing response will generate additional collagen, replacing lost tissue volume for long-lasting results. Using PDO Threads , the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation can provide significant facelift or necklift results without surgery, little downtime, or serious side-effects.
About PDO Threads
Using the body’s ‘selective inflammatory response’, PDO Threads provides unmatched facial rejuvenation. Applied with a fine needle, Polydioxanone (PDO)absorbable sutures, are placed under the skin, lifting the soft tissues of the face or neck. These PDO sutures will kick-start the skin’s healing process, naturally creating new collagen and tissue structure.
PDO Threads are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a safe method to lift, tighten, and smooth skin along the face and neck, as well as other areas of the body. PDO Threads can be used almost anywhere, however, they are most effective along the lower 1/3 of the face; an area traditionally difficult to treat with Botox or fillers. PDO Threads work extremely well on the neck and jawline, but can also be used to improve the cheeks, jowls, nasolabial folds, the marionette lines, or borders of the upper and lower lips.
Benefits of PDO Threads Include:
- Controlled healing under the skin
- Facial lifting and smoothing
- No incisions
- No pain
- No downtime
- Can be performed as a ‘lunchtime’ procedure
- Unmatched results for neck and jawline
- Subtle results without dramatic changes
The PDO Threads Procedure
At the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation, each PDO Threads session is performed in a private treatment room, taking less than half an hour. The threads are meticulously inserted with a small needle, preloaded with an absorbable PDO thread. Dr. Miller will insert the needle gently into the interstitial tissue, approximately 2-3mm below the skin’s surface. The needle is then smoothly pulled out, while the PDO thread remains in place under the skin. Depending on the extent of correction, between four and twelve barbed PDO Threads will be used in one of two techniques:
- NovaMesh – Dr. Miller’s Nova Mesh process uses to create a mesh-like structure under the skin. This is done in a hashtag formation, with 2 sutures inserted vertically, and three horizontally. This mesh pattern will serve as a strong, stable foundation for new collagen production that will serve to tighten the skin naturally from within.
- NovaLyft – Dr. Miller may opt to use the NovaLyft technique for more dramatic results. The NovaLyft technique provides an instant lift and skin repositioning by utilizing PDO sutures designed with tiny barbs attached, to grip below the skin. As these are pulled in two different directions, the tissue sees a significant lift. Over the coming months, these sutures will be absorbed and the new collagen will secure the results.
PDO Threads Recovery
The PDO Threads procedure requires no downtime. Depending on the area treated, most patients are able to return to work and social activities immediately. In some cases, patients may choose to take the afternoon off, or have their PDO Threads procedure before the weekend, so that any swelling or bruising can resolve.
The most common side-effects from PDO Threads include tenderness, bruising, minor swelling, and pinpoint bleeding. As these sutures are naturally absorbed by the body, PDO Threads hold little chance for serious complications or scarring to occur. Infection, suture migrating, puckering, or visible threads are rare. Patients should stop taking any blood thinning medications (Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve) for several days prior to their PDO Threads procedure. PDO Threads are both reversible and removable.
PDO Thread Lifts
The benefits from PDO Threads at the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation can be seen immediately. As the body’s healing process begins, encouraging the natural production of collagen, the results from will continue to improve. Patients can see the lifted, smooth skin last for 9 to 12 months, sometimes longer. In most cases, only one treatment is needed. However, some patients will require a second treatment, depending on the extent of correction needed.

PDO Threads FAQ
PDO Threads are small, PDO absorbable sutures that are placed underneath the skin using a small needle. The nonsurgical technique provides immediate results for a noninvasive facelift or neck lift. Over the following four to six weeks, as the body’s healing process and collagen production is encouraged, the area is lifted and smoothed for long-lasting results.
Each PDO Threads procedure at the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation will take from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated and the technique used.
PDO Threads can be used on most areas of the face and body, but provide exceptional results along the lower 1/3 of the face or neckline. PDO Threads are often utilized to improve the appearance of the eyebrows, sagging cheeks, Smoker’s Lines, Marionette Lines, and sagging jowls.
The best candidate for PDO Threads will have mild to moderate sagging tissue, ptosis, or crepey skin of the face and neck. PDO Threads is not recommended for patients allergic to lidocaine or epinephrine. Those with an active infection, cold, or rash should postpone their PDO Threads procedure.
Patients can see lifted tissues and tighter skin immediately after their PDO Threads session. As the body’s collagen increases, and the natural healing process begins, results will continue to improve. A repeat PDO Threads session will not be necessary for 9-12 months.
