5 Ways to Improve Fine Lines & Wrinkles

07/24/2020 by LEONARD MILLER, MD, FACS, FRCS

At the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation, we believe in offering our patients the full spectrum of options for turning back the clock.
The best procedure for your needs is going to depend on the quality of your skin tone.

I have devoted my career to facial rejuvenation. As a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, I know how to lift sagging skin, tissues and muscles on your face and neck in order to restore a more youthful and natural looking contour. However, I’ve also prided myself on always being an early adopter of “pre-juvenation” treatments. These are non-surgical procedures such as my trademarked Micro-Renewal, for example, that both address and prevent the early signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles.

Plastic Surgeon + Cosmetic Dermatologist = Unstoppable Team

Everyone ages. Certain lifestyle choices such as:

  • Sun Exposure
  • Smoking
  • Diet & Exercise Regime
  • Whether You Live in or Near a Big, Polluted City

These may hasten the process, but fine lines and wrinkles are a fact of life. This is why I have so enjoyed having Board-Certified Cosmetic Dermatologist Dr. Catherine DiGiorgio as a member of our team. As a plastic surgeon, my passion and expertise is surgery. While I utilize many non-surgical modalities as part of my treatment plans, Dr. DiGiorgio is an expert in laser and cosmetic procedures to address and prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Not only does this allow patients to put off (or forgo altogether) surgery, the health, vitality and strength of your skin is a fundamental component of an exemplary surgical outcome. This is why, together, Dr. DiGiorgio, Dr. Doherty and myself make an unstoppable team.

5 Ways to Improve Fines Lines & Wrinkles

At the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation, we believe in offering our patients the full spectrum of options for turning back the clock. When it comes to non-surgical facial rejuvenation, the 5 ways to improve fine lines and wrinkles include:

  • High Quality Skin Care
  • Botox
  • Fillers
  • Microneedling
  • Laser Skin Resurfacing

The best procedure or procedures for your individual needs is going to depend less on your age, and more on the quality of your skin tone and texture. Having said that, skin care is always going to be part of any facial rejuvenation regime. I like patients to start using high quality skin care products such as those by Environ® or ZO® Skin Health by Obagi in their 20’s. It’s a fantastic way to keep your skin texture smooth, tight and blemish free.

Botox & Fillers

Just as skin care can be a great pre-juvenation treatment, many of our younger patients also like to use Botox as a way to prevent fines lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place. Botox and other neurotoxins such as Dysport work by temporarily freezing the underlying “dynamic” muscles in the treatment area. Dynamic muscles are the ones that allow your face to be expressive. This is one of the many reasons why you want to go to a highly qualified injector such as Dr. DiGiorgio, Dr. Doherty or myself as using too much Botox or placing it incorrectly will cause your face to look frozen and alien looking.

Low molecular weight hyaluronic (HA), small particle fillers such as Juvéderm Ultra, Juvéderm Refyne, and Restylane Silk are another great option for improving fine lines and wrinkles anywhere on your face or neck including the forehead, crow’s feet, and around the mouth. Again, the skill of your injector is going to make all the difference when it comes to achieving a natural looking result.

Microneedling

Another fantastic modality for addressing the early signs of aging is microneedling. As the first to introduce this technique here in the United States, I have had a front row seat to how truly effective this procedure can be at eliminating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. There are varying degrees of microneedling from treatments performed by our aestheticians which use very shallow needles to those performed by Dr. DiGiorgio, Dr. Doherty and myself which use much longer needles. Furthermore, the treatment can be combined with radiofrequency (RF) energy such as in a Profound procedure for even more of a dramatic result. One of the many things that I love about microneedling is its versatility. Anyone can benefit from a treatment. The key is simply individualizing the procedure to your unique needs.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Lasers are one of Dr. DiGiorgio’s specialities. She is adept at using them to not only diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but to also promote your own body to produce more collagen and elastin. These are the two elements that give your skin that youthful looking plumpness, lift and glow. Laser skin resurfacing can be a wonderful way to address skin  tone and texture issues. Furthermore, as in microneedling, we offer a range of options so finding the right one for your facial rejuvenation needs is never an issue.
